KARLEE recently recognized Manufacturing Day 2015 by welcoming students from North Garland and South Garland high schools, Richland College, Eastfield College and UT Arlington to tour production operations and visit departments that coincided with each student’s specific interest area. Some students spent extra time in the Weld Shop while some got hands-on experience with lathes and mills in the Machine Shop. Engineering students discussed programming with employees in the Engineering Department.
This year’s Manufacturing Day, which included approximately 2,000 events in factories and plants across the United States, marked the fourth anniversary of the event and was intended to spark more interest in manufacturing.
According to JoAnn Brumit, KARLEE’s CEO, there is a shortage of skilled workers in the manufacturing industry.
“It is estimated that over the next decade, two million manufacturing jobs in America will go unfilled due to manufacturers’ inability to find talent with the required skills,” she said.
The hope is that the event, along with the student tours, will prompt young people to pursue careers in manufacturing.
“It’s a way to encourage today’s youth to consider careers in manufacturing and to inspire the next generation of engineers, builders and inventors,” Brumit said. “It’s a way for manufacturers to convey their passion for what they do so young people can see for themselves that jobs in this industry are interesting, challenging and creative.”
