City purchases Las Brisas Residence Club

Feb. 19, 2022

The city of Garland has purchased the Las Brisas Residence Club (formerly Speegle Hospital) located at 1002 Marion Drive at Resistol Road. All tenants have vacated the property and the city of Garland will soon install a perimeter fence to secure the building. Demolition of the facility will be scheduled once Garland’s City Council has given its approval. If approved, the city will host an event to celebrate the memories residents have experienced over the years and welcome positive change at this location.

Later this year, opportunities to share redevelopment ideas will be provided to nearby residents.

History

According to information from the Garland Landmark Society, Garland Clinic and Hospital was a private facility opened in 1954 by Dr. Robert E. Speegle. The facility was located on Marion Drive at Resistol Road. It housed an emergency room, delivery room, X-ray facility, las surgery facility, laboratory and 11 beds. In addition, it attracted specialists and provided Garland residents their first alternative to Dallas hospitals. The campus later housed the Las Brisas Residence Club.

Speegle served as a World War II battlefield medic in Europe in the 42nd Infantry Division. When he returned home, he attended the University of Texas at Austin. After graduation, he went on to study medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Speegle practiced medicine until he was 86-years-old. He was married to Linda Randolph Speegle for 60 years.

Speegle was an avid hunter and belonged to numerous hunting clubs. He served on the boards of many of those clubs. In addition, he won numerous hunting awards.
