LCHS athlete earns medal at state competition

Jun. 20, 2018

Not only the current 200-meter dash record holder for both Garland ISD and Lakeview Centennial High School, junior Mariah Ayers is also the only district athlete to medal at the recent state UIL track and field competition. She began this season by winning her second District 10-6A Champion title.

Earning Area 10-6A/9-6A and Region 2-6A Champion distinctions as well, she was one of just eight GISD students who advanced to the state tournament in relay and individual events. Ayers was also one of just nine athletes across the state to qualify for the 200-meter dash.

She finished with a time of 23.57, claiming bronze and earning the district’s only medal, as well as Lakeview’s first-ever state track meet medal. This year’s tournament marked Ayers’ second-consecutive state appearance. Last year, she claimed fourth place.

According to her coach, her drive to succeed is what makes her a model athlete.

“Mariah has a work ethic and commitment to excellence that a coach can only dream to have an opportunity to guide,” commented Terenee Knight. “It has been an honor to take part in her growth as a stellar GISD student-athlete.”

Ayers was recognized for her bronze medal at the May 22 Board of Trustees meeting. She also holds Lakeview’s record in the 100-meter dash and is a member of the campus’s varsity girls’ basketball and criminal justice programs as well.
