Letter from Dr. Lopez: Grading expectations

Apr. 18, 2020

Garland ISD Superintendent Ricardo Lopez published the letter below on GISD website April 15 to explain grading expectations for the remainder of the school year.

Dear Garland ISD Families:

The past month has presented hardships that none of us could have predicted or imagined when we left for spring break. I am humbled and grateful for how we have all worked together, overcoming difficulties and barriers, to serve our students so that they continue to learn and grow.

Adapting to a new environment is never easy, and I am sensitive to the many changes that have been required of our parents, our staff and our children. I have been visiting the virtual classrooms your children are now learning in. Being a part of these provides an invaluable snapshot into the challenges of virtual instruction as well as learning from home.

Our goal is to continue to provide the very best support possible, in addition to adjusting to meet the needs of students. An important element of that support is creating a grading structure that allows students to succeed while also encouraging continued learning.  Students have worked diligently throughout the course of the school year; that work was considered when updated expectations were created.

Expectations for the remainder of the school year are available below and were structured to support the new distance-learning format and ensure that all students have the opportunity to be successful.

See the COVID-19 grading expectations page for details.

Teachers will be reaching out to families of students who need additional support via Google Voice. Please note that the call will not show up as originating from Garland ISD and will likely have a 903 area code.

Additional grading expectations, including GPA, semester grade calculation, classroom participation and attendance will be posted the week of April 20.  All families will be notified via district communication channels (district website, social media, and Skylert).

We appreciate your patience as we develop grading expectations that best suit this unique situation while giving grace as we all adapt. For specific questions about grading, please contact us at grading@garlandisd.net.

It is an honor to serve you.

Sincerely,

Ricardo López, Ed.D.
Garland ISD Superintendent
