Letter to the editor: Firewheel Bunco group celebrates anniversary

Sep. 28, 2015

Bunco is a popular game of chance incorporating dice, luck and prizes.  It arrived in the United States in 1855 and has evolved into a game often played monthly in neighborhood groups.  What are the chances that a Garland club would play this game in their Firewheel neighborhood for more than 25 years?  Pretty good for Firewheel Bunco, who just celebrated their silver anniversary as a group of friends getting together the second Tuesday of each month to eat, talk and roll dice.

The anniversary party held September 8 in their usual setting, a members home, brought together current members, former members and substitutes to reminisce about the founding of their group and all the great times leading up to this milestone.

The sense of community is very strong with the ladies of Firewheel Bunco.  A quarter century of togetherness has brought many tears of joy and a few of sadness.  Births, graduations, weddings and the devastating loss of family and friends has kept this group supportive in good times and in some not so good times.

September 11, 2001 fell on the second Tuesday of the month.  What are the chances that a Garland club would play this game that night?  Pretty good for Firewheel Bunco, they played, hugged and prayed.  ‘Cause that’s how they roll.
