The Garland libraries will host a variety of activities throughout October. Check out the list now and make plans to join in the fun.

Early Literacy (Ages 0-5)

Little Art Explorers supports early child development with activities that build motor skills, increase vocabulary, improve symbol recognition and more. Focus is on making art rather than the end product. Oct. 7 theme: Ball Art.

Babies (6-18 months) will listen to a short story and then work on a baby-safe painting activity related to the story. Be prepared to get messy, though mess-free options will be available. Supplies provided. Space limited.

It’s time for a Pajama Party! Evening story time features stories, songs, rhymes and activities. Limited seating.

LITERACY GYM (AGES 3-6) – 10 a.m., Friday, Oct. 13 – Central Library Express – 972-205-2517

Participants will play fun, active games focused on gaining literacy skills. Each attendee will receive a literacy take-home gift. Registration required and begins two weeks before the event. Limited seating.

FAMILY PLACE PLAYTIME WORKSHOPS – 12:15 p.m., Thursdays, Oct. 5 to Nov. 2 – South Garland Branch

During this five-week program series, ages 1-3, and their caregivers enjoy playtimes featuring toys, books and art activities. Families spend quality time together, make friends and talk one-on-one with local childhood development professionals. Registration required. Participants explore science and engineering concepts while completing hands-on STEAM projects. Registration is required and begins two weeks before each event date. Oct. 21 project: Candy Science.

Each STEAM Lab consists of stations featuring activities on a central theme. Attendees take home projects they complete. October theme: Spooky. Limited seating.

Book celebrations that incorporate crafts, STEAM activities and book recommendations. Book series: Dog Man. Registration required, begins two weeks before event.

DIY Shrinky Dinks – 2:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 21 – South Garland Branch – 972-205-3933

Participants design their own Shrinky Dink charms by drawing on shrink plastic with markers. Once designs shrink, charms can be made into keychains or necklaces. Registration required, begins two weeks before event.

You bring the bucket; we provide the decorations. Decorate your trick-or-treating bucket (or bag) with us.

Teens and adults sign up and select recipes two weeks before event, then make their selection at home and bring it to meetings. Participants can choose a recipe from the listed books or use a recipe of their own that fits the theme.

Grasp the basics of macramé while making your own decorative wall tapestry. We will practice various knots. These make beautiful wall décor or a unique gift. Registration required, begins two weeks before event.
