Garland’s Nicholson Memorial Library System has announced a busy and exciting schedule of events for May. There are activities for all ages!
Tribute Artist Sherrill Douglas – Enjoy classic country and rock and roll hits at the Nicholson Memorial Library System free Senior Social Hour event. Tribute artist Sherrill Douglas will perform “Superstars Review” at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 19, at the Central Library. Douglas is known as the “Voice of Many Faces.” She performs tributes to Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Stevie Nicks and Patsy Cline. In addition, Douglas has performed in Las Vegas and New York, at theaters across the country and was featured on Good Morning Texas and Good Morning Tulsa. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library, Senior Social Hour programs areopen to anyone 55+. Registration is not required. Seats fill up quickly. Doors open 30 minutes before performance. Donations of gently-used books and media for Friends of the Library book sale will be accepted.
South Garland Branch hosts Romancing the Book Club – Adults 18+ are invited to join a new romance book club at the South Garland Branch. The next meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 5. Staff and attendees will discuss The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang. Registration is not required.

South Garland Library Resumes ESL conversation classes – ESL conversation classes resume at the South Garland Branch the week of May 3. The class meets weekly on Tuesdays, May 3 to May 31 at 6:30 p.m. Class will be geared toward improving general English skills in a casual setting. Additionally, attendees may practice conversation skills in a friendly environment and build their vocabulary.
Teens form advisory board – Teens 13 to 17 can make a difference in their community by joining the Teen Advisory Board. The next meeting is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 12 at the Central Library. Teens will discuss how the library can serve their age group. Also, participants will receive volunteer hours for attending. In addition to helping improve library service to teens, serving on the board allows teens to socialize with peers. Games are played and refreshments are provided. Teens who apply for board membership need parental consent. They must attend two consecutive meetings, eight meetings per year to officially serve as members.
