Library system announces May activities

Families celebrate diversity – Families enjoy free movies at the South Garland Branch. The next event, Let’s Go to the Movies, will be Saturday, May 5, at 3 p.m., a screening of Coco. In Coco, aspiring musician Miguel and Hector, a charming trickster, journey through the Land of the Dead and learn about Miguel’s family history. Rated PG. Doors open 15 minutes before events. Seating limited. No registration required. All ages welcome. Free popcorn, water while supplies last.

 

Kids develop STEAM skills at Star Wars event – Children of all ages can improve STEAM science, art and engineering skills at the Star Wars event, May the Fourth be With You. The event is at 4 p.m. Friday, May 4, at North Garland Branch. May the Fourth be with You celebrates Star Wars Day which is observed annually on May 4, inspiring the pun, “May the Fourth be with You.” Attendees may create Star Wars origami, design a Lego® Star Fighter Station, build an R2D2 droid, fashion a light saber and make starry slime. No registration required. Themed costumes encouraged but not required.

 

Children make earrings for Mother’s Day – 15-year-olds and younger can make earrings for Mother’s Day at South Garland Branch. Drop in between 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 12, and use craft materials. Crafters will color paper discs, which library staff will compress in a button maker, then attach the earring backs. Participants can also create wearable pins.

 

Kids build with paper cubes – Exercise engineering talents, 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at Walnut Creek Branch. Attendees construct 3-D paper cubes out of  paper and glue. Participants will be encouraged to make multiple cubes, then build structures or abstract sculptures with their creations. Registration required and limited to 24 participants. Register bylibrary phone or in person at Walnut Creek Branch beginning April 21.

 

Jill Beam at Senior Social Hour – Jill Beam will present “You’re Not Getting Older, You’re Getting Better” at 2 p.m., Thursday, May 17, at Central Library. Beam is a public speaker and was Miss Senior Texas in 2015. She is a tap dancer and a flautist with the Mesquite Symphonic Band. Programs are free, open to anyone 55+. Donations of gently-used books and media for book sale accepted.  No registration required. Seats fill up quickly. Doors open 30 minutes early.

 

Workshops for Creative Kids – Children 7-12, can join Creative Kids Group at South Garland Branch. Series features different class each Tuesday, June 12 – July 31. Each is 7 to 8 p.m. Children will learn a new creative skill and then practice with activities and crafts. Registration required, begins Tuesday, May 1. Registration is limited. Parents may register children for two programs per month. Due to construction, locations may change. Visit www.library.garlandtx.gov for info. June 12 – Rock N’ Roll Clue

Play a life-size version of board game Clue, featuring suspects like Taylor Swift and Harry Styles. Event begins at 6:30 p.m.

June 19 – Kindness Rocks

Promote acts of kindness by decorating rocks with positive sayings, then leave them in random spots for people to find.

June 26 – CD Scratch Art

Draw a pencil design on a pre-painted CD, then use a scratch stick to reveal the design in color.

July 3 – Cross Stitch Bookmarks 

Learn to cross stitch and design your own bookmark.

July 10 – Marshmallow Poppers

Make marshmallow poppers out of toilet paper tubes and balloons, then test your aim and accuracy.

July 17 – Fossil Find 

Create your own fossil with vinegar, baking soda, and plastic dinosaurs.

July 24 – Compass Art 

Make circle art using a compass and different color markers.

July 31 – Clay Creations 

Sculpt miniature figures out of polymer clay.
