Library announces May events

The Garland library system has announced the schedule for May. There are a number of informative, fun and interesting events listed. Take a look and make plans now!

Makerspace (Adults and Teens 13+) / 

Makerspace (adultos y adolescentes 13 años y más)

Makerspace at the Central Library Express provides access to maker machines such as 3D printers, a Cricut cutter, a laser cutter, and soldering irons. Once an introductory course is taken, patrons may use machines during Open Lab hours or attend master classes! This is a small sample of what’s to come when Central Library is complete.

El makerspace de la Biblioteca Central Express ofrece acceso a máquinas de fabricación como impresoras 3D, una cortadora Cricut, una cortadora láser y soldadoras. Una vez que se toma un curso introductorio, los clientes pueden utilizar las máquinas durante nuestras horas de laboratorio abierto o asistir a una de nuestras clases magistrales! Adults, teens 13+ may use Central Library Express’ makerspace tools and resources. A variety of craft supplies available. Intro makerspace classes required to use some of the tools during the Open Lab portion. Space is limited.

GRAPHIC NOVEL BOOK CLUB (16+) – 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 21 My Happy Marriage volume 1 by Akumi Agitogi

Each meeting will be a group discussion of the month’s selected graphic novel. Drinks and snacks are provided.

ENTERTAINMENT

ADULT GAME NIGHT – 6 p.m. Thursdays, May 2

Adults 18+ are invited to gather to play games and socialize! The library will provide board games and card games; participants are also welcome to bring their own games. Light refreshments will be provided. Space is limited.

CRAFTS

CROCHET CORNER – 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 30

Crafters welcome for fun hour! We’ll make potted plants, or bring your own piece to work on. Participants encouraged to bring their own supplies if possible. Basic guidance, hooks to use during program, and yarn available while supplies last. Patterns call for 3.5mm – 4mm hook (E/F/G) and DK or worsted weight yarn for the pot, plant, and soil.

EDUCATIONAL

ONLINE ESL CONVERSATION CLASSES6:30 p.m. Mondays, May 6 – Aug. 26  – *Excludes major holidays

Looking for a comfortable atmosphere to practice speaking English? This class is a way for new English speakers and others to practice English in a stress-free, conversational setting. Meetings will be held online via Google Meet. The link can be found on the library’s website  www.library.garlandtx.gov under Library Events and Programming.

PLAY & LEARN

It’s playtime! Families can participate in Play & Learn, a weekly event where families with children ages 0 to 5 can enjoy an assortment of toys, games, and activities that foster imagination, creativity, and problem-solving.

MINDFULNESS AND YOGA – 6 p.m. Thursdays, May 2 – 23

Mindfulness and yoga go hand in hand. Learn from a certified yoga instructor who will help you practice with breath work and gentle Vinyasa-style yoga poses. You may bring your yoga mat, blanket, or towel but it is not required. All skill levels are welcome! Participants encouraged to practice safely within the limits of their individual abilities.

Explore fiction writing and get encouragement from other writers in a friendly environment! You will get a prompt for inspiration and time to write. Those who wish may share their work for feedback from group. All skill levels welcome!

ESL CONVERSATION CLASSES – 6:30 p.m. 1st, 2nd and 3rd Thursday of each month, May 2 – Aug. 15

Improve your general English skills in a casual setting. Attendees may practice their conversation skills, build their vocabulary, and meet a diverse group of people. *Excludes major holidays.
