Library system announces November activity schedule

The Nicholson Memorial Library System has announced its schedule of activities for November. There is something fun and interesting for everyone.

 

Adults Cook the Book – Adults can learn new recipes and share talents with fellow foodies at Cook the Book at 1 p.m. Nov. 12 at South Garland Branch. To register, participants will choose a recipe from a pre-selected cookbook then prepare the recipe at home and bring it to be enjoyed in a buffet-style meal on event date. Selected cookbook will be available at Reference Desk at South Garland Branch beginning Oct. 29. Open to adults 18+. 972-205-3931.

 

Adults make decorative rock magnets – Adults 18+ turn smooth river rocks into decorative magnets. Event is at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 at South Garland Branch. Supplies provided by library. Registration required and limited to 24 participants. Registration begins Oct. 26. 972-205-3931.

 

Kids learn straw loom weaving – Kids 6-12 learn to weave at Art Explorers at 2:30 p.m., Nov. 2 at Walnut Creek Branch. Children develop STEAM art skills by creating masterpieces. Kids will construct looms out of drinking straws and make a bookmark or bracelet. Registration required, limited to 24 kids. Kids “Take Apart” Technology – Ages 6-12 discover what makes certain technology work at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at Central Library. Children will take apart obsolete or nonfunctioning pieces of technology, such as computers, keyboards and phones and analyze parts inside. A laptop will be available to look up functions of items they discover. 972-205-2516.

 

Native American storyteller at Senior Social Hour – Celebrate Native American Heritage Month with storyteller Dorayne Breedlove. Breedlove appears at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, at Central Library. In addition to storytelling, she is well-versed in music, puppetry and theatre and has been performing for 20+ years. She will present “Living the Life of Aloha.” Senior Social Hour programs are free to anyone 55+. Donations of gently-used books and media for Friends of the Library book sale accepted. Families enjoy free movies – Next movie is Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2:30 p.m. at South Garland Branch – Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. In the film, Miles Morales is a teen in New York struggling with school and friends. After he encounters original Spiderman and NYC savior Peter Parker in the multiverse, he learns that he must begin training to become the new Spider-Man. Rated PG. Doors open 15 minutes before movie. Tweens make indigenous wall hangings – Tweens 10-13 can make God’s Eye wall hangings at November event. Tween Scene consists of activities related to interesting themes. Participants receive book recommendations based on theme. In November, tweens will use sticks and yarn to weave God’s Eye wall hangings. God’s Eyes are traditional spiritual objects among many indigenous American peoples. They look similar to macramé wall hangings. First Tween Scene is 6:30 p.m. Nov. 7, at South Garland Branch. Adult book club – Ages 18+ invited. Event at South Garland Branch at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 21. Attendees will discuss Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman. Registration not required.
