Long road for Texans Can students pays off

Feb. 11, 2019

Texans Can Academy – Garland students took to the stage for a special graduation commencement ceremony at Arapaho Road Baptist Church Friday, February 1. Most graduates have their own story about the struggles they faced and the journey they took to earn their high school diploma. Students who were former dropouts or who were not succeeding in a traditional high school setting took a short walk across the stage culminating a long journey for most.

Graduations at Texans Can Academies are not typical commencement ceremonies. They are small, personal and always filled with celebration. Rather than waiting for applause at the end of the class presentation of diplomas, clapping, whistling and shouting as each student crosses the stage are the norm.

Some students were first in their families to receive a high school diploma. Some did not have families at their graduation and pushed through high school on their own. Most walked across the stage to hold a diploma that seemed impossible to earn just a few years ago.

Celebrating 34 years of providing the highest quality education for all students, Texans Can Academies are graduating thinkers. This unique network of 14 charter schools is located in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio. The schools are tuition-free, open enrollment, public high schools of choice serving students who have struggled in a traditional high school setting. To date, more than 151,883 youth have been given a second chance at life with the opportunity to pursue their dreams.
