Lyles MS salutes local heroes

Showing their support for those who diligently work to serve others, Lyles Middle School recently organized a celebratory lunch for Garland ISD School Resource Officers (SROs). The campus hosted its first Salute Our Local Heroes luncheon last month, allowing students to thank the SROs who help keep GISD schools safe.

“Lyles wanted to honor these special community servants for their much-deserved recognition for watching over the children of GISD,” said event organizer and teacher Dianne Shaw. “The students were engaged and interacted with the SROs. They had a great time talking with the officers and building relationships of trust and respect.”

After serving themselves, guests were treated to a short program that included the LMS choir. The group then observed a commemorative cake cutting, and ended the affair mingling with students and administrators.

“The Local Heroes Luncheon has bridged a connection between Lyles and Garland Police Lt. C.D. Trusty’s office,” Shaw revealed. “We received rave reviews from those in attendance—the SROs; our local business partner, Albertson’s Store Director Donna Hilliard; the Director of Family and Community Engagement Ramona Aguilar; students; teachers; and Lyles administrators.”

The inaugural student-led event was such a hit, Shaw is already forming a plan for the 2016-17 luncheon.

“Lt. Trusty informed me that he wanted to meet with me to start planning next year’s event. Our current plans are to extend the invitation to honor local firefighters and the Garland Police Department. We want to pass on the message that hard work in our community is not overlooked, but appreciated.”
