May. 6, 2020

Update: Victim Identified

The victim is identified as 28-year-old Isaac Edward Velasco.

May 6, just before 4 a.m., the Garland Police Department responded to a gunshot disturbance in the 100 block of Lake Drive. Officers located a Hispanic male suffering from a gunshot wound in a shopping center directly south of the original location in the 1500 block of South First Street. Paramedics from the Garland Fire Department transported the male to Texas Health Presbyterian of Dallas where he was pronounced deceased.

Detectives believe several subjects arrived at the house on Lake Drive wanting to fight the residents. The homeowner, 43-year-old Mariano Nano Castillo, produced a handgun and shot the Hispanic male.

Based on the evidence and witness statements, detectives do not believe the shooting was in self-defense. Castillo was arrested and is currently in the Garland Detention Center charged with murder.

The name of the victim will not be released until notification of next of kin.

Bond has not been set. The investigation remains active.
