Man shot while wielding machete

Jan. 6, 2020

Monday, Jan. 6 at approximately 3:30 p.m., the Garland Police Department Officers responded to a disturbance with a weapon in the area of South Third Street and Freeman Drive.  Officers were advised that a man was arguing with different individuals and swung a machete at a vehicle.

Officers were able to locate the subject, who was later identified as 38-year-old Scott Norris, in front of a residence in the 1400 block of South Third, still holding the machete and yelling belligerently at officers. Officers began speaking with Norris attempting to get him to drop the weapon.

While officers were speaking with Norris, he began to advance toward them, weilding the machete.  One officer, an 8-year veteran, fired his duty weapon striking Norris.

Norris was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  After being treated, Norris was released to police custody and transported to the Garland Jail.

Norris is charged with Aggravated Assault Against a Public Servant.

Garland detectives, Internal Affairs, along with members of the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office Public Integrity Unit, responded to the scene to investigate according to standard procedures.

The officer will be placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with departmental policy.
