Man wanted for aggravated assault takes own life

Jun. 17, 2021

On June 15, Garland police officers responded to an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon at an apartment in the 300 block of River Fern Avenue. Officers learned that a female resident of the apartments was visiting a male friend in his own apartment at the same apartment community. During the visit, the male produced a handgun and held it to his own head.  At some point the male pointed the gun at the female.

The female fled from the male’s apartment and took refuge in her own apartment.  When officers arrived, they attempted to locate the male but were unsuccessful.

The male was identified as 56-year-old James Edward Ryan and an arrest warrant for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon was obtained for his arrest.

On June 17, at approximately 4 p.m., GPD officers attempted to serve the warrant on Ryan at his apartment in the 300 block of River Fern Avenue. As officers knocked on the door, they heard a loud bang come from the area of the apartment. When the officers entered the residence, they found Ryan suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The gun was still in his hand.

Life-saving measures were performed and paramedics transported Ryan to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The investigation remains active.

No officers were injured during this incident.
