The North Texas Chapter of Texas Master Naturalists has organized a series of discovery walks in prairies and parks in Dallas County during April and May. The walks will be one hour long and will be led by expert walk leaders with knowledge of plants, grasses, birds, insects, amphibians and geology, depending on the type of walk scheduled.
These walks are free and are designed for families and individuals of all ages. Most of the walks are scheduled on the weekends, with a few during the week and a couple in the evening. The walks are designed to be fun, as well as educational and participants will discover the beauty and value of Texas native plants and animals.
There are many different locations to choose from. A partial list includes the Bath House Cultural Center, Flagpole Hill, Cedar Ridge Preserve, Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center, Twelve Hills Nature Center, Spring Creek Nature Preserve, Harry Moss Park and Crawford Memorial Park.
The Garland walk is May 7 from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Meet at the pavilion next to the parking lot at 1770 Holford Road in Garland. (east side of Holford).
Additionally, in conjunction with the City Nature Challenge, there will be three separate BioBlitz events held at Crawford Memorial Park, L.B. Houston Park, and Emerald Lake Park at the end of April. These are free, family-friendly events to find and record as many species as possible within a designated area. An Urban Biologist and Master Naturalists will be present to help with identification and to assist in your hands-on experience in recording biodiversity.
