Mike Williams inducted into El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame

Jul. 1, 2024

The El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame has announced its newest inductee, Garland ISD Assistant Director of Athletics Mike Williams. The honor recognizes his outstanding career as a high school baseball and football coach who has made a lasting impact on the sports community. Williams has spent nearly three decades shaping young athletes and fostering excellence in sports.

The journey to this distinguished recognition is rigorous and competitive. Nominations are reviewed across several categories, and Williams was chosen in the Coach/Administrator category. The selection process involves presentations, supporter endorsements, and a final vote by a committee, which leads to the announcement of the new inductees.

Williams’ career began many years ago with the opening of a new high school in El Paso, where his former high school baseball coach hired him to coach. Over the next 29 years, he coached baseball and football, racking up over 400 wins and leading numerous teams to success. Williams also served as a mentor to several athletes, including some who would go on to play professionally. Standout athletes he mentored include Bruce Ruffin, who made it to the Major Leagues as a pitcher, and Alan Zinter, the current hitting coordinator for the Chicago White Sox.

Reflecting on his career, Williams expressed pride in his athletes’ achievements and the importance of the relationships he built over the years.

“It’s overwhelming to be recognized this way,” he said. “Being inducted to the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame is a tribute to all the incredible people I’ve worked with and the talented athletes I’ve had the honor of coaching. It’s also a great way to be remembered by my hometown.”

After moving into administration, Williams made a significant impact by helping improve athletic facilities and programs, similar to his current work in Garland ISD. His efforts have been vital in enhancing sports education and opportunities for students.

As he prepares for the induction ceremony this week, he remains focused on the future. He aims to continue his legacy of excellence and mentorship in Garland ISD.

“Every day is a new opportunity to learn and make a positive impact,” he shared.

Williams is one of eight new members joining the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame. The annual induction banquet is on Wednesday, June 26.
