The Garland City Council canvassed the vote from the city’s general election and welcomed new District 2 Council Member Kris Beard to the dais in a special meeting Tuesday, May 14.
Beard was administered the oath of office by her husband of over 40 years, Bobby, and flanked by family members as she officially kicked off a two-year term.
Council Member Beard is retired after more than two decades as case manager at the Autism Treatment Center, assisting individuals with intellectual disabilities and/or congenital physical disabilities. She served as president of the Chandler Heights Neighborhood Association from 2012 to 2024 and is a graduate of Garland’s citizen police and fire academies.
Stepping down and offering parting remarks at the special meeting was Deborah Morris, who had served District 2 for three full terms, the limit as defined by the Garland City Charter.
The ceremonial evening also marked the beginning of another term for Jeff Bass in District 1 and Margaret Lucht in District 5. They ran unopposed in the May 4 general election as did B.J. Williams, who was unable to attend the special meeting and will take the oath when the council reconvenes in regular session Tuesday, May 21.
Seventeen amendments to the City Charter were also approved by voters in the general election. Results are posted here. More than 1,400 Garland voters participated during the early voting period for the general election and about 1,200 more voted on election day.
