The Nicholson Memorial Library System has announced its schedule of activites for children and adults for April.
Kids make abstract art – Children ages 6-12 will discover a technique for creating abstract art at Art Explorers, 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at Walnut Creek Branch. Children learn about different types of art, then develop their STEAM art skills by creating masterpieces. Attendees will make crumpled paper art by crumpling a piece of paper, identifying the natural lines and shapes created when the paper is unfolded and coloring those shapes with colored pencils. Kids conduct recycled science experiments – To celebrate Earth Day, children 6-12 can use their STEAM science skills to conduct experiments using recycled items at the Books and Beyond program, 2 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at Central Library. Books and Beyond consists of book discussions and activities related to monthly themes. Adults craft miniature wine cork planters – Adults turn wine corks into miniature planters for succulents at adult craft workshop at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27 at South Garland Branch. Each workshop features a unique craft project or art piece. Supplies provided by library. Registration required and limited to 24 participants. Registration begins Saturday, April 13. 972-205-3931. Master gardening for kids – Kids 8-12 can learn about plants and gardening just in time for Earth Day. Event is Saturday, April 13 at 2:30 p.m. at South Garland Branch. Master Gardener Sandy Means-Bannon will give an interactive talk on plants. Attendees will receive seeds and pots. Pot decorating supplies will be provided. 972-205-3933.
Tweens create blackout poetry – April is National Poetry Month. Tweens 10-13 can celebrate by creating blackout poetry at Tween Scene, which consists of activities related to fun and interesting themes. Program is at various library locations Thursday evenings. Attendees will use pages from old books to make blackout poetry, or poetry created by marking out words from previously published works. Tweens will circle the words they want in their poems with crayons or markers and draw or color over the rest of the page. The design they create on the page is meant to express the meaning of their poem. First event – 6:30 p.m. April 4 at South Garland Branch. Country singers perform – Seniors can enjoy classic country music performed by 2 Country 4 Nashville at Senior Social Hour program at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 18 at the Central Library. 2 Country 4 Nashville is a vocal duo, husband and wife Jo-el and LeAnne Ulmer. They perform traditional country hits in addition to their original tunes. They play more than 300 shows per year and have received an American Western Artists award and a Josie Music Award. Program free and open to anyone 55+. Donations of gently-used books and media for Friends of the Library book sale will be accepted. No registration required. Seats fill up quickly.
