NMLS announces August activities

Jul. 25, 2022

The Nicholson Memorial Library System has announced a great schedule of activities for August. There’s something for everyone going on in August.

ESL Conversation Classes Aug. 2 – ESL conversation classes resume at the South Garland Branch Library beginning the week of Aug. 2. The class will meet once a week on Tuesdays from Aug. 2 to 30 at 6:30 p.m. The class will be geared toward improving general English skills in a casual setting. Attendees may practice their conversation skills in a friendly environment, build their vocabulary, learn about American culture and meet a diverse group of people. The South Garland Branch Library is at 4845 Broadway Blvd. at Oates Road. 972-205-3931.

Book club – Adults ages 18 and older are invited to join the book club at the South Garland Branch Library. The next meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18. Library staff and attendees will discuss The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave and enjoy light refreshments. No registration is required. The South Garland Branch Library is at 4845 Broadway Blvd., at Oates Road. 972-205-3931.

Patrons blind dates with books – Garland’s Central Library is offering its adult patrons one final fun summer activity. Throughout August patrons can go on “blind dates” with books by checking out a book without knowing the title or author. The books will be wrapped in paper and located on the library’s display shelving. The first line of the book and its genre—science fiction, romance, horror, YA— will be written on wrapping. Participants may also fill out a review card to give their opinions on the books they chose. Patrons who return their review cards by Aug. 31 will be entered into a prize drawing to win gift cards to a local ice cream shop. The Central Library is at 625 Austin Street in Downtown Garland. 972-205-2533.

Romancing the Book Club – Adults ages 18+ are invited to join a new romance book club at the South Garland Branch. The next meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4. Library staff and attendees will discuss Secrets of a Summer Night by Lisa Kleypas. No registration is required. The South Garland Branch Library is at 4845 Broadway Blvd., at Oates Road 972-205-3931.

Zoo animals visit Senior Social Hour – Senior citizens can get a preview of the Dallas Zoo at Senior Social Hour. Zoo staff will present an educational and interactive program at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at the Central Library. The program will feature six to eight animals from around the world, including a variety of birds, mammals and reptiles. Due to the presence of live animals, refreshments will not be served. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library, Senior Social Hour programs are free and open to anyone 55+. No registration is required, but seats do fill up quickly. Donations of gently-used books and media for the Friends of the Library book sale will be accepted. 972-205-2533.

Teens form Advisory Board – Teens 13 to 17 can make a difference in their community by joining the Teen Advisory Board. The next meeting is 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at the Central Library. Teens will discuss how the library can serve their age group in terms of events, materials and services. Participants will receive volunteer hours for attending. 972-205-2517.

Please be aware that photographs and video may be taken at Library programs for use in print and/or electronic media at the Library’s discretion.
