As the school year begins, school meals help ensure children receive balanced nutrition throughout the week. Free and reduced-price (F/R) meal programs, in particular, help families stretch their food budget, especially as nearly three-quarters (73%) of Texans report having a harder time affording groceries now compared to the same time last year. No Kid Hungry Texas highly encourages parents to turn in their F/R application forms this school year:
- Why?
- Balanced Nutrition: School meals help ensure kids get three healthy meals a day while also helping families stretch their food budget.
- Additional Benefits for Families & Schools:
- In addition to ensuring your kids get school meals, free meal forms may qualify your family for additional benefits, like discounted exam fees and college applications, extracurriculars, scholarship opportunities, and even home wifi.
- These applications also help your child’s school receive additional classroom resources that will support all students’ education.
- Who?
- You should fill out the form even if you’re not sure whether you qualify for free meals, and especially if your family’s income has changed in the past year.
- How?
- To fill out the form, visit your school/school district’s website. Or, request a paper copy from your child’s school.
