Obituary: Johnny Thorn

Services for Johnny Thorn, 85, Grand Saline, are scheduled for 1 p.m., Sunday, August 25, 2019, at Bartley Funeral Home with Chaplain Jeff Taylor and Rev. Paul Goebel officiating.

 

Interment will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Princeton.

 

Mr. Thorn passed away August 23, 2019, in Grand Saline.  He was born December 26, 1933, in Princeton to Wade Hampton & Mae Evelyn Godwin Thorn.  He spent his early years in Princeton, many years in Wylie, Garland and Waxahachie before moving to Grand Saline two years ago.  He graduated from Princeton High School, Class of 1952. He was a professional fiddle and guitar player and had given lessons for over 50 years. He even taught Martie McGuire with Dixie Chicks to play the fiddle.  Johnny was a loving husband, father and grandfather.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

 

Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Deloyce Thorn of Grand Saline; son, Tommy H. Smith and wife Neda of Bullard; five daughters, Kimberly Hutto and husband Rex of Fred, Debbie Goebel and husband Paul of Grand Saline, Laura Meeks and husband Don of Como, Jacquelyn Gibson and husband Alex of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma and Marci Abbott of Ft. Worth; brother, Jim Thorn and wife Judy of Ryan, Oklahoma; two sisters, Laura Thorn Jackson and husband David of Ryan, Oklahoma and Grace Thorn of Ryan, Oklahoma; 18 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends.

 

Pallbearers will be Tommy H. Smith, Jr., Paul Goebel, Alex Gibson, Don Meeks, Rex Hutto, Rex Hutto, Jr., and Tommy H. Smith III.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Texas.

 

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m., Saturday, August 24, 2019, at Bartley Funeral Home.
