Update: The suspect has been identified as 40 year old Shaun Leo Gates.
July 10, just before 2 p.m., Garland Police Department officers responded to a concern for welfare report on the westbound service road of East I-30 at Bass Pro Road. Callers stated that a subject, who was partially clothed, was armed with two machetes, swinging them at and striking passing vehicles.
Responding GPD officers arrived and located the male subject in the parking lot of the 1500 block of East I-30 near the service road. Officers observed the male subject to be wielding two large knives and begin to walk toward officers.
Officers gave loud verbal directions for the subject to stop and drop the knives. The commands were ignored and the subject continued to march toward the officers.
A 27-year veteran officer fired his duty weapon and struck the subject. The male was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Garland Police Department homicide detectives, along with members of the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office Public Integrity Unit, responded to the scene to investigate according to standard procedures.
The officer will be placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with departmental policy.
The identity of the subject has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
