Officials meet to upgrade voting process

May. 1, 2019

Dallas County is looking to overhaul its Election Day voting system by changing from precinct-based polling locations to countywide Vote Centers.

There’s a chance to learn about the change – and provide input – right here in Garland. The first of three Vote Center Advisory Committee meetings to develop the plan will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at the Dallas County Road and Bridge Office, 715 Rowlett Road.

In about 60 Texas counties where Vote Centers are in place, a voter can go to any polling place in the county on Election Day. That’s already how early voting works in Dallas County. But currently on Election Day in Dallas County, a vote may only be registered at a specific polling site designated according to the precinct where the voter resides.

A short question-and-answer period and a survey of guests will be featured at the May 9 meeting in Garland. Suggestions or questions can also be submitted on the Dallas County website, or by email to dallascountyvotes@dallascounty.org.

Dallas County leaders would like to have the voting centers and other changes in place before the November general election. Other advisory committee meetings will take place May 30 in Richardson and June 20 in Grand Prairie. The Dallas County plan will also require Texas Secretary of State approval.
