Suspected drunk driver arrested for child’s death

May. 24, 2020

Saturday, May 23, just after 10:30 p.m., a Garland police officer attempted to stop the suspected drunk driver of a Black Nissan SUV. The driver of the SUV had run through a red light at high speed, going southbound on Broadway Boulevard at Oates Road. The Garland officer attempted to catch up to the speeding vehicle in order to initiate a traffic stop. The officer observed the Nissan speed through a second red light, without regard to safety, at Broadway Boulevard and Duck Creek Road.

The Garland officer attempted to stop the vehicle by turning on the overhead lights and sirens, but the Nissan refused to stop or acknowledge the officer’s presence. The Garland officer informed dispatch that he was in a vehicle pursuit and requested backup. Due to the dangerous driving of the suspect vehicle, the DPS helicopter responded to assist as officers initiated a vehicle pursuit.

Garland officers pursued the Nissan for approximately five minutes on IH-30 and IH-635 through Mesquite and Garland. At one point, the Nissan exceeded 100 M.P.H., and the driver turned off the vehicle’s headlights as it traveled at high speeds on IH-635. Fearing for the safety of the other drivers, and in hopes that the suspect would slow down, the Garland officers reduced their speed to the point the police vehicles were no longer in sight. The DPS Helicopter continued to track the Nissan from a distance.

Despite the fact that officers were no longer behind the Nissan, the suspected drunk driver did not slow down or change how he was driving. The suspected drunk driver, later identified as 19-year-old Adrian Maldonado, exited IH-635 and ran drunkanother red light while turning westbound onto Northwest Highway. As Maldonado approached Shiloh Road, a white Ford Mustang was traveling through the intersection. Maldonado ran through the red light and struck the Mustang. The DPS helicopter informed Garland Officers of the path the Nissan was traveling and that it had been involved in an accident.

Maldonado and a female passenger, later identified as 19-year-old Denise Vivas, fled the scene on foot in a further attempt to escape. Garland officers arrived shortly after the crash and, with the assistance of the DPS helicopter, were able to apprehend both subjects.

The victims in the Mustang are the driver, 30-year-old Hugo Alberto-Maturino, adult female passenger, 30-year-old Miriam Minaya, 1-year old Alice Maturino, who later died from her injuries and 2- year-old Cole Maturino, the other child injured.

Maldonado and Vivas were arrested and are currently in the Garland Detention Center.

Police are charging Maldonado with Intoxication Manslaughter, three (3) counts of Intoxication Assault and Evading Arrest with a Vehicle Causing Death of Another. He also had a Probation Violation Warrant out of Dallas County for Burglary of a Habitation. Police are charging Vivas with Evading Arrest. The investigation is ongoing.
