Puffs: A live-theatre production for the holidays

Nov. 30, 2023

Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic, is an original play written by Matt Cox, Rowlett native Matt Cox and Sachse High School theatre alumnus. The play is a parody of the popular book series about a particular school of magic involving a boy with a scar on his forehead, but from a different perspective.

Not only has the show earned notoriety and nominations for its comedy and staging. It has broken records off-Broadway in New York and has been one of the few shows filmed for movie theatres to be shown via Fathom Events. It also has the distinction of being Melbourne, Australia’s longest-running play.

“I’m a fan of the wizarding franchise. I own all the books and movies, so the idea of a spoof piqued my interest,” said Jill Lightfoot, the production’s director. “This script is so fun and clever and made me laugh out loud. I knew I had to direct it. It really is a special show.”

The cast includes:

Sinan Beskok

Caitlin Whitley

Josh Hensley

Brennan Jones

Savannah Lloyd

Lorenzo Gapud

Penelope Richards

Brendan Tetter

Andi Allen

Kate Beckett

Emma Triana

Elena Holt

Jonathan Luce

“Matt Cox is just an astounding writer. Gag-for-gag, his scripts are as funny as any of the biggest comedies on Broadway right now. Watching anything from his portfolio being performed Off-Off Broadway is like watching Rocky Balboa fighting in a Middle School Junior Varsity Boxing Intramural. ‘Punching above his weight’ doesn’t even come close to describing it. His writing is just too damn funny. Every line is a new experience in “Wow, that was great! What’s next?” – Thomas Burns Scully, OnStage Blog
