The Garland Fire Department, through the Citizen’s Fire Academy, is proud to provide an opportunity for citizens to participate in a program which is intended to promote a greater understanding of the mission, responsibilities and activities of the fire department while serving the community.
This is accomplished through education, demonstration and most importantly, participation. Class members are given the opportunity to participate in various “hands-on” operations. Some will be challenging. However, these tasks are strictly voluntary. Participants will be exposed to the many and varied functions of the fire department in an interesting, informative and rewarding experience.
There are two classes a year. This is an eight-week program. Meetings are held Thursday evenings each week. The class culminates with a Graduation and Burn day on the Saturday following the last Thursday. The spring 2016 class dates are March 3-April 28. The Saturday date is April 30.
Upon completing this program, participants will have knowledge of how the fire department operates and its capabilities and also be able to create a safer home and work environment. GFD hopes that citizens who complete the academy that they will take what they have learned into the community by sharing it with friends and associates, thereby helping to foster a better understanding of the services the fire department provides for the community.
Applications are accepted in order received. Class size is limited and once the spring class is filled, remaining applications will be held for the class.
