Because the infamous Texas summer heat is upon us, the Salvation Army has officially launched the cooling station program at many of its centers in the DFW Metroplex. The cooling stations provide relief from the heat throughout the summer. The stations provide two necessary things for those at risk of heat exposure:
– Hydration – People should drink plenty of water when it’s excessively hot. Cold water will be available throughout the summer. It’s important for people to drink water before they get thirsty and to continue drinking throughout the day.
– A cool environment – Increasing the amount of time spent in air-conditioned environments helps the body cool off and lessens the likelihood of getting overheated. The Salvation Army’s Cooling Stations provide a cool environment where people can cool off for a brief time or stay all day.
The Garland cooling station is located at the Salvation Army Recreation Center at 451 West Avenue D. The station is open Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
The Dallas cooling station is at the Salvation Army Shelter located at 5302 Harry Hines Boulevard. It is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. – 8 p.m.
