Robotics teams compete in world championship

Four robotics teams from Garland ISD, one from Hudson Middle School and three from Sachse High School, have qualified for the 2016 VEX World Championship to be held in Louisville, Kentucky, April 20-23. In addition, the team members will be honored by the Sachse City Council at the March 21 meeting at 7:30 p.m.

Hudson Middle School: Under the direction of Gye Kraemer

Team RoboBros V2:  Thom Pham, Felix Matos Colon, Alan Tran, Danny Lee

These seventh grade students were the tournament champions at the McKamy Middle School tournament in Flower Mound, qualifying them for the state championship.  At the Texas state championship Team RoboBros V2 were ranked in second place and were awarded the Excellence Award.  The Excellence Award is the highest honor offered by Vex Robotics, qualifying them for 2016 Vex World Championship.

Sachse High School: Under the direction of Michael Roha

Team 5408 X Hax: Zachariah Smith, Ian Pearce, Jacinta Tran, Trace Black

Team 5408 X Hax was one of the first teams to become tournament champions early in the regular season, which qualified them to compete at the state level. They went on to win second place for programming skills in a local tournament. While competing at the Regional State Competition they ranked second in programming skills at regionals and fifth in the entire state with a score of 263, which qualified them to advance to the 2016 Vex World Championship.

Team 5408A Texas Torque: Kristen Fitzgerald, Kaci Le, Christen Waite

Team 5408A Texas Torque was tournament finalist numerous times throughout the season and also won two judges awards. They ranked fourth overall in qualifying rounds at the Texas State Championship where they advanced and competed in the semifinals which qualified them for the 2016 Vex world championship.

Team 5408D Colossus: Parker Youngman, Ryan Nelson, Alexis Odegbaro, Caleb Hernandez

Team 5408D, Sachse Colossus, began this season undefeated through qualifying rounds in their first tournament. They were Tournament Champions at the Garland ISD VEX Tournament in January which qualified them for the North Texas Regional State competition. There they and their alliance finished as Tournament Champions of the 2016 Texas State Championship. This win qualified the team for the 2016 Vex World Championship.

The 2016 Vex World Championship will include the top 480 high school teams and 160 middle school teams from 29 countries. These teams will compete for the 2016 world title.
