The temperature is rising and threatens to hit 100 degrees with week. In response, the Salvation Army has launched its summer relief program. The Salvation Army is activating 13 cooling stations across the DFW Metroplex to provide lifesaving relief for the homeless, people without air conditioning and those whose jobs require them to work outside.
Cooling stations provide two necessary things for those at risk of heat exposure:
- Hydration – People should drink plenty of water when temps are excessively high. Cold water will be available throughout the summer. With such scorching temperatures it’s important for people to drink water before they get thirsty and to continue drinking throughout the day.
- A cool environment – Increasing the amount of time spent in air-conditioned environments helps the body cool off and lessens the likelihood of getting overheated. The Salvation Army’s Cooling Stations provide a cool environment where people can cool off for a brief time or stay all day.
The cooling station in Garland is at the Salvation Army, 451 West Avenue D. It is open weekdays from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Please do not forget to check on family members, friends and neighbors who might need help during the hot weather. Also, share the cooling station information with anyone who might need this type of service.
