Salvation Army, Reliant, Dallas Cowboys deliver heat relief

Jul. 12, 2023

Amid this year’s unseasonably high temperatures across the region, The Salvation Army of North Texas is again teaming up with its heat relief sponsor, Reliant and partner, the Dallas Cowboys, to offer holistic services aimed at helping the community stay safe and cool.

At the Carr P. Collins Social Service Center Wednesday, July 12, from 8:30 to 10 a.m., volunteers from The Salvation Army, Reliant, and the Dallas Cowboys will distribute much-needed fans, water bottles, nutrition bars, and more through the location’s drive-thru food pantry.

“As part of our commitment to supporting all those combating poverty, addiction and homelessness, The Salvation Army offers relief to as many community members as possible through programs aimed at long-term stability,” said Major Paul McFarland, area commander of The Salvation Army of North Texas. “Heat-related illness are a real threat in our community, especially for seniors, youth, people with chronic diseases, and those experiencing homelessness and poverty. The need for support only continues to grow, and thanks to the generosity of our partners and the public, The Salvation Army can respond to the everchanging needs of North Texans.”

“This summer has been one of extreme heat and we still have a lot of summer left. To help North Texans stay cool, Reliant is once again joining with The Salvation Army as part of our annual Beat the Heat program,” said Andrea Russell, vice president, Reliant. “We’re honored to help support vulnerable neighbors by donating more than $35,000 toward the distribution of box fans and a pallet of bottled water for each of the 13 cooling centersheat across North Texas.”

Throughout the summer, The Salvation Army, with support from Reliant, and partner, Westlake Ace Hardware, will distribute more than 1,000 box fans while operating cooling stations to offer hydration and shade to those at risk of heat-related conditions in Dallas, Collin, Denton, Tarrant and Ellis counties.

In addition to accommodating those seeking respite from the heat, The Salvation Army deploys emergency disaster mobile feeding units to bring relief directly to vulnerable populations and provides financial assistance for families experiencing lost wages who may be at risk of having their utilities shut off.

Following the impacts of inflation, rising evictions, and lasting effects of the pandemic, The Salvation Army has expanded its resources to meet a new generation of need. Each week, The Salvation Army of North Texas feeds 10,000 people through its 12 food pantries, treats 500 people through its three recovery programs, and houses 1,300 people through its six shelters and senior living centers
