AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), a nationally recognized nonprofit and college-readiness system, announced today that 281 of this year’s 500 Dell Scholars are AVID students. The Dell Scholars Program, an initiative of the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, selects high school seniors who have overcome significant obstacles to pursue their college education. These students are provided with financial assistance, resources, and mentoring throughout college to ensure that they have ongoing support to succeed in college and obtain a bachelor’s degree.
South Garland High School AVID student Jackeline “Jackie” Estrada has been awarded one of the 2018 scholarships.
AVID works to close the achievement gap by providing educators with proven strategies that ensure all students have the opportunity to succeed in college, career, and life. Year after year, a significant number of AVID students have been chosen as Dell Scholars. With the help of their AVID educators and peers, these students have shown great determination to stay on a college-ready path, taking rigorous courses and building vital academic habits.
Dr. Sandy Husk, CEO of AVID, praised these newest Dell Scholars: “The Dell Scholars are an inspiration to all of us at AVID. These students have overcome significant obstacles to succeed, and we’re honored to be a part of their college journey. I’m excited to see what they will achieve in the Dell Scholars Program.”
