Storm recovery continues

Jun. 9, 2024

Four days after a storm that damaged more than 1,000 Garland homes, Garland Animal Services has been struggling with capacity at its shelter. Staff is actively working to reunite pets and owners who were separated when fences went down May 28 due to straight line winds of 65 to 80 mph across the city.

Friends of Rescue Animals is offering a $50 PetSmart gift card to the first 30 to adopt a dog from the Garland Animal Shelter & Adoption Center this weekend.

The Shelter & Adoption Center, 1902 State Highway 66, is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 2. The gift cards are being distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

The shelter has put out a call for foster homes to aid with the large volume. View all the dogs currently at the shelter by visiting https://garlandanimalservices.org/193/Lost-and-Found-Animals.

Garland Power & Light reported Saturday that 1,500 of its customers are without power. Another 926 Garland customers served by Oncor were without power.

Brush pickup continues to be another focus of the recovery effort. Garland Sanitation brush crews are well into their normal Wednesday routes as daylight ran out on them Saturday. The brush trucks will continue to serve customers in their normal order. Please continue to be patient as we’re a couple days behind on brush, however, regular garbage and recycling routes are on schedule.storm

The Hinton Landfill has taken in large quantities as several took advantage of its extended its hours in the days following the storm. Despite the periods of rain, on Saturday the landfill was on track to already surpass the tonnage of brush collected after an EF-2 tornado struck the city in 2019.

Other landmarks in the recovery include the full restoration of traffic signals, 100 of which were knocked out by the storm. At a few sites, generator power was a key to quickly reestablishing blacked out or flashing yellow lights.

City libraries and recreation centers will continue to serve as charging-stations or a place to get air conditioning. Here are the facilities that will be open Sunday, June 2, and their hours of operation:

  • Audubon Recreation Center, 342 Oates Road, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Central Library Express, 713 Austin St. (limited seating and charging capacity), 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Fields Recreation Center, 1701 Dairy Road, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • South Garland Library, 4845 Broadway Blvd., 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
