Despite the district’s closure, Garland ISD Student Nutrition Services (SNS) continues to make sure all families are fed. In fact, since March 16, SNS has served approximately 300,000 curbside meals. And, the team is being recognized for their dedication.
Garland ISD was recently named among the top 10 middle-income school districts in Children at Risk’s Texas School Food Rankings. Evaluating meal participation rates and after-school meal programs offered in districts across the state, these rankings recognize the schools that are doing an excellent job at ensuring Texas students are getting nutritious meals throughout the day.
“Student Nutrition Services is truly lucky to have a wonderfully talented group of individuals whose true passion is to provide quality nutrition to the students of our community,” said Assistant Director of Nutrition and Menu Operations Jennifer Craig. “When a team works together, they can do great things.”
Middle-income districts are those with at least 10,000 students and a 60-70% economically disadvantaged population. GISD made the list at No. 7.
“Students who are not hungry and have eaten nutritious meals are healthier and ready to learn,” said Children at Risk President and CEO Bob Sanborn. “The school districts at the top of our rankings are doing the very best at making sure low-income students have one of the most important tools they need to be successful.”
