Texas Education Agency grades GISD schools

Aug. 20, 2019

The Texas Education Agency released letter grades, a new system that started with the 2017-18 school year, for each of the state’s school districts. Individual schools received letter grades as well.

Last year, Garland ISD earned a B, or 81 points out of 100. The 2018-19 year saw a seven-point increase to 88 out of 100, also a B.

According to the TEA website, “Schools earn a B (80-89) for recognized performance when they serve many students well, encouraging high academic achievement and/or appropriate academic growth for most students.”

Schools are graded in three areas:

  • Student Achievement – shows how much students know and are able to do at the end of the school year. It is calculated with a formula using STAAR Performance, College/Career/Military Readiness and Graduation Rate.
  • School Progress – shows how students perform over time and how that growth compares to similar schools. It is calculated using a formula that includes Academic (STAAR) growth and Relative Performance.
  • Closing the Gaps – tells how well different populations of students in a district are performing. Calculated using Grade Level Performance, Graduation Rate, English Language Proficiency and College/Career/Military Readiness.

Grade breakdown was as follows: 11 schools scored A; 35 schools scored B; 20 schools scored C; two schools scored D; two campuses were not rated.

GISD’s enrollment is 55,848 and 64.9 percent of those students are economically disadvantaged, 31.4 percent are English language learners and 8.7 percent are students receiving special education services. GISD employs 3,643.9 teachers.
