Third-grader raises money for animal shelter

Aug. 24, 2024

Third-grader Benjamin loves animals, and he loves helping the ones at the Garland Animal Shelter and Adoption Center. His mother, Christie Fuentes, is the community outreach coordinator at the shelter.

Benjamin began raising money this summer by opening “Ben’s Lemonade Stand.” He has had two opportunities to sell tasty lemonade and raised $569 the first time and $1,110 the second time. He exceeded his goal both times.

The funds raised will go to Friends of Rescue Animals and will be used to help the shelter support heartworm treatments, dog transports and out of the ordinary medical treatments.

Ben will have another stand Saturday, Oct. 26, at the shelter’s Alumni Dog Show event from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

He has a dog named Willow and said that he has always loved animals. His family also had two senior dogs that died this year.

“It’s weird that I get to work at the shelter,” Ben said. “Ever since my dogs went to Heaven, I really wanted to help other dogs even more.”

shelterHe added that he wanted to hold the fundraisers because he loves getting to help the shelter pets.

Ben said that helping the animals through fundraising makes him feel proud, and it should. It is a wonderful thing he’s doing, and wouldn’t it be great if everyone was as helpful and kindhearted as Ben?
