Tree lighting kicks off holiday season

Dec. 2, 2022

The city of Garland and Firewheel Town Center outdid themselves on this year’s Christmas tree lighting event, A Garland Christmas at Firewheel. The event, held Thursday, Dec. 1, attracted a huge number of folks who wanted to see the lighting of the tree as well as take advantage of the many holiday activities. The city’s tree lighting event is traditionally held on thetree square in downtown Garland. However, the construction prompted the temporary move to Firewheel Town Center.

The kids enjoyed holiday-themed bounce houses, a snow hill, crafts and much more. The Garland fire and police departments were on-hand to visit with the crowd and the police department got to show off its newest SWAT vehicle. The fire department collected items for its toy drive.

In addition, city departments including Heritage Crossing, Water Utilities, Nicholson Memorial Library System, Go Green Garland, Emergency Management and more were there to visit with the crowd.

Families took advantage of the many photo ops, one of which was a live reindeer! And, everyone enjoyed the music provided by The Big Easy Brass Band, the Salvation Army Brass Band and several Garland ISD choirs and bands. Roaming carolers also provided Christmas music. There were also food trucks that provided various, tasty treats.

All the holiday fun, along with the chilly weather, was great for helping everyone get into the Christmas spirit.
