Triple the fun: Trace Bundy concert, Monarch 1-Mile Walk, historic home tour

Mar. 31, 2018

This year’s Travis College Hill Historic Home Tour will be three times the fun with three separate events starting Friday, April 27.

Trace Bundy concert: The first is a concert by acclaimed guitarist Trace Bundy. Known as the “Acoustic Ninja” for his legato and finger-tapping skills, Bundy is considered one of the best fingerstyle guitarists in the world.

Bundy’s website describes his talent this way: “His music is poetry in motion, using harmonics, looping and his unique banter and stage presence to deliver an unforgettable live concert experience.”

The concert, which is sponsored by the nonprofit group Friends of Garland’s Historic Magic 11th Street, will be at First Presbyterian Church at 930 West Avenue B at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $25 and available through Eventbrite. Click here to purchase.

Magical Monarch 1-Mile Fun Walk: The second element of the three-part event is the Magical Monarch 1-Mile Fun Walk. The walk will be held Saturday, April 28, at 11 a.m., in conjunction with the Travis College Hill Historic Home Tour. The fun walk precedes the noon dedication of the new 11th Street Entryway Garden and Monarch Butterfly Waystation in Garland’s Travis College Hill Historic District.

Persons of any age may participate in the walk to be held in the neighborhood around 11th Street. Those walking are encouraged to wear butterfly wings that they have created, adapted or purchased for the Fun Walk. An award, custom-created for the Fun Walk, will be given for the best butterfly wings. The walk is intended to promote awareness of Monarch Butterfly conservation.

The neighborhood, with 11th Street between Avenues B and D at its heart, will dedicate its new 11th-Street Entryway Garden and Monarch Butterfly Waystation at noon, after the Fun Walk.

A $15 entry fee includes entry in the Fun Walk as well as a ticket for the seven-home tour Saturday afternoon. Tickets are available the day of the race or Click Here to purchase in advance.

Travis College Hill, Embree Home Tour: Last, but not least, is the Travis College Hill and Embree Historic Home Tour, also Saturday, April 28. The homes will be open from1 p.m. – 5 p.m.

As a part of the home tour, attendees are invited to join in a 100th birthday celebration for the vintage home at 400 South 11th Street. The Craftsman-inspired dwelling was built in 1918. A giant birthday cake and hot dogs will be served.

This year is the first to feature not only homes on 11th Street, including Garland’s Historic Pace House, but also select dwellings in historic Embree (across Avenue D south of Travis College Hill). Five homes are in the Travis College Hill area and two are in Embree.

The Travis College Hill Historic District, platted in 1913, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017 and was Garland’s first National Register Historic District. Embree was an antecedent community to Garland. It became a part of Garland upon incorporation in 1891.

Admission for the home tour is $10 per person. Proceeds benefit Running 4 Clean Water, Team Texas for Fallen Officers and Friends of Garland’s Historic Magic 11th Street. $15 tickets are available for admission to the Fun Walk and home tour. Click Here to purchase tickets in advance. Tickets will also be available at the event.
