Thursday, Jan. 14, at approximately 1:30 p.m, the Garland Police Department responded to the report of several subjects fighting in a gas station parking lot in the 1800 block of West Kingsley Road. Witnesses also said the individuals began shooting at each other and then fled the location in two different vehicles.
Shortly after, another call was received from a business in the 1900 block of South First Street indicating that two males suffering from gunshot wounds had arrived at the location in an SUV. One male was identified as 18-year-old Jairo Sait Saavedra and was transported to a hospital but later released. The second unidentified male was pronounced dead at the location.
While officers were investigating the shooting, they learned that a 15-year-old juvenile who was also involved in the shooting was at a hospital in Dallas. Investigators recovered video surveillance showing several subjects meeting at the gas station for unknown reasons. While at the location, the individuals began to fight. The 15-year-old and Saavedra retrieved handguns and exchanged gunfire. It is believed that the 15-year-old shot Saavedra and the deceased.
Detectives do not believe the individuals acted in self-defense.
Saavedra is currently in the Garland Detention Center, charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. The 15-year-old is currently in the Garland Juvenile Detention Center charged with Murder.
One handgun was recovered. The investigation is ongoing.
The 15-year-old’s identity is not being released.
