Week 9 of the GISD high school football season ended with another win for the undefeated Garland Owls. The Naaman Forest Rangers and Sachse Mustangs also got wins.
Rangers defeat Eagles
The Naaman Forest Rangers (4-1, 4-1) got a 28-13 win over the Rowlett Eagles (2-5, 2-3) Thursday, Oct. 21. Kingsley Bennett carried the ball 28 times for 194 yards and scored three rushing TDs. The defense scored for the Rangers on an 83-yard interception return by Roman Williams. NFHS QB Tray Walton completed 15 of 23 passes for 161 yards.
The Eagles’ QB Harris Boyd threw for 247 yards and one touchdown to Corey Kirkling who caught seven passes for 153 yards. RHS also scored on 23- and 40-yard field goals.
Patriots defeated by Wylie HS
The Wylie HS Pirates (3-5, 3-2) got a 24-0 win over the Lakeview Centennial Patriots (4-4, 1-4) Friday, Oct. 22. Zechariah Dunston carried the ball 19 times for 90 yards for the Patriots. The Patriots were not able to score against the Wylie HS defense.
Owls get 61-24 win over Raiders
Williams Stadium played host to a sold-out crowd at the Garland High School homecoming game, Friday, Oct. 22. Leah Dugger and Jay Hernandez, both members of the Mighty Owl Band, were crowned Homecoming Queen and King.
GHS remains undefeated through week nine of the high school football season. The Garland Owls (8-0, 5-0) collected 653 yards against the North Garland Raiders (4-4, 1-4) – 414 yards in the air and 239 rushing yards. Quarterback Cergio Perez ended the night at 29-37 (78.38%) and eight TDs. Jordan Hudson caught three of the TD passes and Charles Allen caught two. Also adding to the catches for TDs were Jayshon Powers, Ellis Rogers and Aaron King. Powers also scored a rushing TD.
Raiders’ QB Godspower Nwawuihe had one TD pass to D’Aundre Johnson. Nwawuihe also scored a rushing TD. The NGHS special teams added to the total with a touchdown on a kickoff return as well as scoring two points on a blocked, fumbled extra point attempt.
Mustangs get win over Titans
The Sachse Mustangs (5, 3 – 4, 1) defeated the South Garland Titans (0-8, 0-5) by a final score of 60-17 Friday, Oct. 22. The SHS offense put together 517 total yards on the
game and quarterback Alex Orji accounted for 215 in passing yards and five TDs. Jamari Harts caught two TD passes and Kaliq Lockett, Jhett Creel and Elijah Aimes caught one each.
QB Grayson King entered the game in the third quarter and added two rushing scores and had five carries for 90 yards. Luke Keefer also added a rushing TD.
The SHS coaches recognized Jamari Harts as offensive MVP for three catches for 95 yards and two touchdowns. Jacob Gonzalez was named defensive MVP for five solo tackles one assist, two tackles for loss, a forced fumble and recovery. Alejandro Alvarado was recognized for making all extra points and for successful field goals.
The Titans quarterback Jimmy Shelly threw for 275 yards and two touchdowns. Tyreon Key caught both TD throws. The Titans also added a field goal.
