Week three: High school football

Week three of the high school football season brought victories for three Garland ISD teams. The Garland Owls, North Garland Raiders and Lakeview Centennial Patriots got wins. The Naaman Forest Rangers game was canceled because of COVID-19. District play begins next week.

GHS 49 – Prestonwood Christian HS 21

Garland Owls’ quarterback Cergio Perez threw for 298 yards and five touchdowns in this week’s win. Three of the TD throws were caught by Jordan Hudson who had 10 receptions for 106 yards. Ellis Rogers and Charles Allen also caught Perez passes for TDs. Jayshon Powers rushed for 134 yards on 10 carries and two touchdowns. Powers and Rogers were named Offensive Players of the Week. Pedro Aguilar was named Lineman of the Week.

NGHS 57 – Richardson Berkner HS

The North Garland Raiders collected 491 yards – 268 on the ground and 223 in the air. QB Godspower Nwawuihe ended the night at 16-31 with 223 yards and four TDs. In addition, he carried the ball 26 times for 170 yards and four TDs. Isaiah DeLeon caught two of Nwawuihe’s passes for scores. De’Aundre Johnson and De’Corais Taylor also caught TD passes.

LCHS 40 – North Mesquite HS 22

The Lakeview Centennial Patriots’ quarterback Jonathan Hester II ended the night at 11-16 with 112 yards. He had one TD on a completed pass to Dermaine Arnett. Zechariah Dunston carried the ball 15 times for 94 yards and two scores. Hester also scored two rushing TDs.

SHS 28 – Denton Braswell HS 38

The Sachse Mustangs’ QB Alex Orji (named Offensive MVP by the coaches) ended the night at 17-32 for 233 yards and three TDs. In addition, Orji rushed for a score. Jamari Harts caught two of the TD passes and Jhett Creel caught one. Harts made five catches for 96 yards. The coaches named Jacob Gonzalez the Defensive MVP with five solo tackles and four assists. Kicker Alejandro Alvarado was the Special Teams MVP. He was four for four on PATs and scored 100% on kickoff placement.

SGHS 28 – Richardson HS 46

The South Garland Titans’ QB Tyreon Key was 5-7 with 73 yards and one TD on the night. QB Jimmy Shelly finished the night at 4-12 with 31 yards and one TD. Key also carried the ball 14 times for 121 yards and two scores. Jacob Crim caught seven passes for 93 yards and caught both TD throws.

RHS 9 – McKinney HS 35

The Rowlett Eagles’ QB, James Okolo, threw for 136 yards. Devonta Crow scored a rushing TD for the Eagles. Corey Kirkling caught three Okolo passes for 54 yards. In addition, Jacob Martin added three points on a field goal.
