WNV-positive mosquitoes – Update

Oct. 11, 2021

The city of Garland Health Department (GHD) has received a report of confirmed presence of West Nile Virus (WNV) in mosquitoes in the 3000 block of North Spring Court (GA11) and the 4300 block of O’Banion (GA03).

These are the ninth and 10th mosquito trap areas where West Nile Virus has been confirmed in mosquitoes. The other positive sites, along with the dates of confirmation, are listed below. The protocol for treating positive areas is to begin adulticide spraying. The areas are sprayed twice to reduce the risk of human infection.

Positive 2021 WNV-positive mosquito trap locations are as follows:

  • 1600 block of Dent St. (GA15), 7/27/21
  • 500 block of W. Vista Dr. (GA20), 7/28/21
  • 1400 block of E. Miller Rd. (GA05), 7/28/21

  • 5700 block of Indian Hills (GA09), 9/22/21
  • 1000 block of Bay Shore Dr. (GA16), 9/29/21

The health department is trapping at 27 selected locations per week. View a mosquito trapping/spraying map to see areas where WNV has been detected.

No WNV human cases have been confirmed in Garland thus far. However, because infected mosquitoes have been found, transmission to humans is possible. So, be sure to take preventive actions.

Additionally, the GHD asks citizens to eliminate standing water on their property. This includes:
  • buckets
  • birdbaths (clean twice per week)
  • clogged rain gutters
  • pet water dishes
  • tire piles

Remember – Containers that can hold just one or two inches of water can breed mosquitoes. Report standing water that you can’t eliminate yourself to the GHD. To report dead birds or standing water, call 972-205-3720 or use the Garland eAssist app.

Use the 4 “Ds” to reduce exposure to mosquitoes:

  • DEET All Day, Every Day: Use insect repellents that contain the active ingredient DEET or other EPA-registered repellents. In addition, be sure to follow label instructions.
  • Dress: Wear long, loose and light-colored clothing while outdoors.
  • Drain: Drain or treat all standing water in and around your home or workplace where mosquitoes could lay eggs.
  • All Day Long: Limit outdoor activities all day, as mosquitoes can bite any time of the day.
