GFD reports death of woman in house fire

May. 11, 2018

Thursday, May 10, at approximately 12:51 a.m., the Garland Fire Department responded to a house fire at 4909 Collingwood Drive. When the fire department arrived on scene the one story single family residence was heavily involved with fire and the fire was showing through the roof. Additionally, a citizen was possibly still in the house. The fire department made rapid entry in an attempt to rescue the victim, but they were unable to locate the resident.

Neighbors were reporting that an elderly female lived at the residence and was believed to be home. Due to heavy fire in the structure and the amount of debris in the home, as well as the structural instability of the house, the fire department was unable to locate anyone. The fire department had to wait for a search dog to aid them in locating the citizen, if she was still in the home at the time of the fire.

The Garland Fire Department’s initial response was 36 personnel, two battalion chiefs, one emergency medical services supervisor, two fire trucks and three fire engines, one ambulance and one squad. A second alarm was dispatched at 12:57 a.m. to provide an additional 11 personnel, two fire engines and one ambulance.

The cause of this fire is currently under investigation and it is unclear if the home had working smoke detectors.

At approximately 12:30 p.m. on the same day, an adult female was found deceased in the burned structure at 4909 Collingwood Drive. Identification is pending and will be released once there is positive identification and the family has been notified.
