Working to get water to apartments

Feb. 25, 2021

What began as more than 6,000 apartment units without water has now been reduced to 503 units in nine complexes. There are also just over 400 units that have water but no hot water. Mayor Scott LeMay listed some of the things being done for those without water.

  • Port-a-Potties have been provided to six complexes and more are on the way.
  • The fire hydrants at six complexes have been converted to filling stations.
  • The Texas Baptist Men have delivered a shower/laundry station at one complex.
  • More than 45,500 bottles of water have been delivered to the complexes.
  • City officials and staff are working with property owners/managers and continue to monitor progress daily.
  • The city of Garland’s staff in the Code, Health and Building Inspection departments have continued to work to help the apartment complexes.

All the help is great. However, the hardships that these outages have caused are beyond difficult and frustrating. City of Garland staff and elected officials will continue to do everything they can until the problems are solved.

How you can help:

  • Water donations are still being accepted at Intrinsic Smokehouse & Brewery at 509 West State Street and Rosalind Coffee – 107 North Sixth Street. Assistance is also needed to distribute the water. Visit garlandtx.gov.
  • Donate food to Good Samaritans of Garland at 214 North 12th

District 5 Council Member Rich Aubin explained part of the problem in a recent Facebook post.

“Many complexes are finding that the scope of their problems is far larger than they thought – e.g. a water main into a building breaks, fix that, only to find out that every unit in the building also has a break,” he wrote.

He added that for every problem that is addressed, another is found. Some of the subsequent problems found are worse than the original ones.

Aubin also complimented the city of Garland staff and residents.

“I am humbled (again) by the heart of this city – its people…” he wrote. “We are so blessed as a city with a great staff and awesome residents. Together, and only together, I have faith that we can solve these issues.”
